Bali, summit to surf.
Sunrise on Batur, the terraces at Tegalalang, manta rays off Nusa Penida and Kecak fire behind Uluwatu. What each trip is really like, what it costs, and where to book it.
Seven worth the early alarm.
First trip or fifth, these carry an island week: the Batur sunrise everyone photographs, a full day hopping the reefs off Nusa Penida, the waterfall trail your villa host quietly keeps for themselves.

Up the volcano before the sun.
The pickup comes at two in the dark. You climb Batur by torchlight and reach the rim as the sky goes gold over the caldera and Agung floats above the cloud. Coffee in Kintamani on the way down, a hot spring if you booked one. Nothing else on the island starts a day like it.
Which day at sea is yours?
Everyone wants a day at sea; the right one depends on how you like to spend it. Three ways to do it, from the full island loop to the quiet coast. Pick the one that sounds like you, and every trip behind it is already reviewed and priced.
The big boat day
Nusa Penida, all of it
from $100 · 6,424 reviews
The fast boat from Sanur, then the whole postcard in one go: Kelingking’s T-Rex cliff, the natural infinity pool at Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and manta rays over the side at Manta Point. Long day, a lot of driving on the island, and worth every minute for a first trip.

Straight to the reef
Just add water
from $100 · 6,424 reviews
Skip the cliff-edge photo queues and give the day to the sea. Boats out to Manta Point and the coral gardens off the Nusas, wetsuit on, hours in the water with mantas gliding under you. For strong swimmers who’d rather be wet than driving.

Away from the crowds
The quiet coast
from $40 · 211 reviews
The long drive west most visitors never make: Menjangan Island’s wall dives and calm shallows inside the national park, barely a boat in sight. For divers and repeat visitors chasing the Bali that the south forgot.

The island doesn’t stop at sunset.
Kecak builds by firelight on the Uluwatu cliff while the surf hammers the rocks a hundred metres below. Down the coast, Jimbaran’s grills smoke over the sand and Seminyak tips into the night. The best evenings here are booked, not stumbled into.
Cook it, then eat it.
Half a day in a village kitchen: grind the base gede, wrap the pepes in banana leaf, pull a whole Balinese meal off a wood fire in a family compound. You leave full, and able to make it again at home.
The jungle at full throttle.
Quad bikes through tunnels and flooded paddies, white water down the Ayung past carved gorge walls, canyon scrambles into hidden pools. Wear what you don’t mind soaking, and leave the good camera behind.

Bali prays out loud.
Bathe in the spring water at Tirta Empul the way families have for a thousand years, climb to the split gates of Lempuyang with Agung framed between them, watch the offerings pile up at Besakih. A good guide is the difference between a photo stop and understanding what you are looking at.
A different Bali every hour.
The island changes character every hour’s drive. Ubud for jungle and craft. Uluwatu and the Bukit for cliffs and surf. The east for the big volcano temples. The north for tall waterfalls and quiet lakes.
Know what you’re after?
Twelve ways to spend a Bali day. Pick the one that sounds like you, and every trip behind it is already reviewed and priced.
Give the island a whole day.
The best of Bali is a drive from the beach clubs. Cross to the east for the water temples, north for the tall waterfalls, or take a boat off the southeast coast entirely.
A first trip, in three days.
You can’t do all of Bali in one trip, but you can do the right three days. This is the sequence we’d hand a friend landing at Denpasar tomorrow: green hills first, the volcano next, the coast last.
Day 1
Settle into Ubud
Ease off the flight in the hills: the terraces at Tegalalang, a jungle swing over the valley, the Monkey Forest, a water temple before dinner. Green everywhere, no rush.
Plan day one →
Day 2
Batur before dawn
The 2am start earns its keep: sunrise from Batur’s rim above the cloud, coffee in Kintamani, a waterfall or two on the drive back down. Sleep early the night before.
Plan day two →
Day 3
Down to the coast
Swap green for blue: Uluwatu’s cliff temple, an afternoon in the surf or a beach club, then Kecak and fire as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean.
Plan day three →
The latest from the island.
